Bornholm is a quiet island in the Baltic Sea and the easternmost point of Denmark. Located halfway between the Swedish and Polish coasts, the island of Bornholm has many sunshine hours and the quality of its light attracts many artists. Bornholm has a a varied scenery – the island is mountainous, green and fertile with unlimited fields. It is in fact the only place in Denmark with a high and rocky coast. Bornholm also has many white beaches and is an ideal island for biking or hiking.

We will visit Hammershus, the largest medieval fortification in Northern Europe built in the 13th century. It was long believed that the castle was built as a private residence for the archbishop of Lund. However, new evidence suggests that it was built as the royal residence of Valdemar II of Denmark and as a base for Danish crusaders. We will also visit the Round Church in Østerlars, built around 1160 and the largest of the four round churches on the island of Bornholm, as well as the villages of Gudhjem and Svaneke. During the excursion, we will enjoy a delicious fish buffet in Gudhjem.

We will pass the the residence of the royal family Amalienborg Palace and get a glimpse at the famous Gefion fountain, designed by the Danish artist Anders Bundgaard. It is also the tallest cathedral in Denmark and has the most frescoes in the country. We will continue to the open-air museum Den Gamle By, the old city, with more than 70 historic buildings from different cities throughout Denmark. The buildings were built between 1550 and 1800 and were moved to the museum in the beginning of the 20th century. Finally we will visit ARoS Art Museum, established in 1859 and the oldest art museum in Denmark outside Copenhagen. In 2004, the museum opened in a new modern 10-story building designed by Danish architects Schmidt Hammer Lassen. Today, the ARoS is one of the largest art museums in northern Europe.
