DAY 1
Arrival at Longyearbyen Airport
Four nights at the Radisson Blu Polar Hotel in Longyearbyen, incl. breakfast
DAY 2
Northern Lights Boat Trip to Barentsburg (15:30-20:00)
All aboard the MS Bard! We will travel with an electric catamaran that has the greenest technology available on the market. The Svalbard archipelago is known for its Arctic silence, and with this silent electric catamaran, you will experience Svalbard in the best possible way. The boat is emission-free when it goes electric. With its 450 inhabitants, Barentsburg is the second largest colony in Svalbard. The mining community is located by the beautiful Grønfjord and is operated and owned by the Russian mining company Trust Arcticugol. Here, you will find coal-fired power stations, hospitals, hotels, schools, kindergartens and cultural and sports buildings. Although there are still mines in the city, tourism is developing to become the most important industry in Barentsburg. Visiting Barentsburg is an experience of combining unspoiled nature with Russian culture!
DAY 3
Dog Sledding on Wheels (09:00-13:00)
Think you can’t mush without snow? Think again! Join us on a tour where you can really experience the joys of dog sledding as you drive your own specially designed sled on wheels! The dogs will speed along as we follow the road towards the old northern lights research station. Underway, there is a good chance that we will see reindeer, foxes and flocks of migratory birds. The guide will drive the first sled, with space for two guests in his sled. The other participants follow in small wagons for 3 people. We will make several stops along the way to give the dogs a drink. The tour takes us along the track into Endalen, past the cableway turning station and towards the old Gruve 5 mine.
Northern Lights Evening at Camp Barentz (19:00-22:00)
The northern lights can be seen 24 hours a day during the Polar Night. Increase your chances by getting away from the lights of town, and learn more about this fascinating display while enjoying a hearty dinner at our northern lights base at Camp Barentz, about 10km from Longyearbyen and well away from the light pollution of the town. During this all-inclusive evening you will enjoy a fascinating presentation on these Polar ‘fireworks’, as well as a delicious dinner and drinks This is an indoor activity, however we recommend comfortable outdoor clothing and warm shoes, as you may wish to spend time outdoors looking at the northern lights!
DAY 4
Quad-bike Safari (13:00-16:30)
We start the tour from Longyearbyen and drive into Adventdalen. After about 3 kilometres, we will see the old airport. From here, we continue into the beautiful Endalen. Following this, the guide will lead us up the winding road to Breinosa, the mountain where the Mine 7 is located. On top of the mountain we will spot the Kjell Henriksen Observatory for northern light research. The views over the Adventdalen and Isfjord are fantastic here, and we will take a break to enjoy them. On the way back, we will visit a trapper’s station, home to 100 Alaskan huskies. We will have a hot drink, and perhaps get to meet the dogs before returning to town.
Aurora Evening Cruise on the Icefjord (20:30-23:00)
On this tour, the on board guide and the crew of the boat will guide you away from the lights of town and into the darkness of the fjord – the perfect place to look for the aurora. The guide is a fount of local knowledge, and will be happy to tell you all about the local area, and their experiences in it. Above, on the bridge, the captain and crew will keep watch for the northern lights, and let you all know should they spot them flickering in the sky. The crew will also serve a barbecue supper, with salmon, marinated whale and spare ribs, served with freshly baked bread and salad.
